Fighting Navy use of Sonar; threat to marine mammals // BAY AREA Organization, SeaFlow

by ziggy
This organization advocates against the Navy's LAF sonar program. Attached is their PSA and more information. Website has helpful information, including KQED interview that details differences of opinion.

The U.S. Navy is blasting extremely powerful sonic waves, called Low Frequency Active Sonar, into the ocean to detect Quiet submarines.  At close range, the noise is millions of times more intense than what the Navy considers safe for divers, and billions of times more intense than the level known to disturb large whales.  Many marine animals use hearing as we use vision (It's dark half a mile underwater).  Active Sonar has caused fatal hemorrhaging in the brains, eyes and ears of whales and dolphins.

The U.S. Navy plans to deploy this system in over 80% of the world's oceans as soon as possible.  Active Sonar is unnecessary,.  The Navy has to passive sonar alternatives which do not harm marine life.

You can help stop this dangerous and senseless technology.  Click here to visit the SeaFlow website.  There, you can learn how to take action on this issue.  A 1-minute public service announcement is attached in mp3 format as well.  The website has an extensive press area, with a nice collection of news stories.

Seaflow encourages individuals and other groups to work with us to stop the deployment of LFA Sonar. Seaflow is collaborating closely with internationally respected Earth Island Institute's International Marine Mammal Project on public education projects, media outreach and coalition building. We invite your participation.

Seaflow Mission Statement

Seaflow is a grassroots environmental organization working with individuals and groups to build an international movement dedicated to protecting ocean life from man-made threats.

Our current focus is stopping Low Frequency Active (LFA) Sonar through educating citizens about its dangers, drawing on science, creative arts, and community for inspired political action.
