The SHORTWAVE REPORT 1/3/03 ¡Listen Globally!

by Dan Roberts (outfarpress [at] saber.net)
A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion recorded from a shortwave radio. 2 files- broadcast quality (13.3MB) and quick download (3.3MB). With times and freqs for listening at home. Free to rebroadcast. Germany, Netherlands, Spain, and China.
Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (January 3) is up at the website http://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/shortwave.shtml in both broadcast quality 13.3MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (3.3MB) (29:07) It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
This program will be aired on Friday evening at 7pm on KZYX/Z Philo CA, you might be able to stream via http://www.kzyx.org
There are several other streams that work better- http://members.cruzio.com/~frsc/ Freak Radio Santa Cruz (96.3fm) streams this program on Friday at 5:35pm (PST) and on Monday at 9amPST.
Also check out LavaLamp Radio (Japan)- http://www.rinku.zaq.ne.jp/bkaec205/
streaming the SWR, check out the schedule.
And the Partytown streams are great and informative- http://www.partytown.com/radio
This week's show features stories from Radio Deutsche Welle, Radio Netherlands, Spanish National Radio, and Radio China International.
From Germany- In Israel, reserve soldiers who refuse to serve in the occupied territories of Palestine, have had their court appeals rejected. In Britain, police will be sanctioned to use deadly force to stop people from leaving areas where biological or chemical weapons have been released. Then a press review from Monday, covering foreign minister Fischer's remarks about German involvement in a war on Iraq, and European response to the so-called crisis in N Korea. Then from Tuesday, Australia's asylum seekers in refugee camps rioted and attempted a break out.
From Netherlands- By Wednesday afternoon, peace had returned to the refugee detention centers in Australia. Brazil's new president has been sworn in, the former trade union leader being Brazil's first president from the working class. Oil from the massive spill off the coast of Spain has reached beaches in France. Cloneaid, the organization claiming to have successfully cloned a human, describes their surprise at the public's concern. Then an interview with the former UN Humanitarian coordinator for Iraq, discussing the new tighter sanctions against Iraq.
From Spain- UN Sec General Anan says he sees no justification for an attack on Iraq at this time, and Turkey says it doesn't want to rush to support a US/British attack. Israeli forces continue to demolish Palestinian homes, which critics say is a violation of international law.
From China- Israeli troops continue to escalate attacks on Palestinans. Iraq says it is satisfied with the UN Arms inspectors, but disagrees with the plan to have its scientists taken out of the country for interrogation. India and Pakistan have made their annual exchange of lists of nuclear facilities.
All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I am still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations rebroadcasting this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production costs. You can do so through the website. Many thanks to those that have donated! No Guilt!
