The SHORTWAVE REPORT 12/27/02 ¡Listen Globally!

by Dan Roberts (outfarpress [at] saber.net)
A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion recorded from a shortwave radio. 2 files- broadcast quality (13.2MB) and quick download (3.4MB). With times and freqs for listening at home. Free to rebroadcast. Netherlands, China, Germany, Russia, and Cuba.
Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (December 27) is up at the website http://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/shortwave.shtml in both broadcast quality 13.2MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (3.3MB) (28:56) It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
This program will be aired on Friday evening at 7pm on KZYX/Z Philo CA, you might be able to stream via http://www.kzyx.org
There are several other streams that work better- http://members.cruzio.com/~frsc/ Freak Radio Santa Cruz (96.3fm) streams this program on Friday at 5:35pm (PST) and on Monday at 9amPST.
Also check out LavaLamp Radio (Japan)- http://www.rinku.zaq.ne.jp/bkaec205/
streaming the SWR, check out the schedule.
And the Partytown streams are great and informative- http://www.partytown.com/radio
This week's show features stories from Radio Netherlands, China Radio International, Radio Deutsche Welle, the Voice Of Russia, and Radio Havana Cuba.
From Netherlands- Russia and Iran are continuing development of a nuclear power plant despite US objections. In the US, the FBI has asked schools and universities for personal information on foreign students and teachers, without notifying the subjects of the search. Then a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council discusses the recent cancellation of Palestinian elections.
From China- Palestinian leader Arafat is urging the world to intervene and end Israel's military actions. Syria has denied Ariel Sharon's claim that they are storing Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. Turkey has felt great pressure from the US to allow the use of bases for an attack on Iraq.
From Germany- On Wednesday Turkey approved a 6 month extension for the US military to use its air bases, and Saudi Arabia denied the same request. Saddam slammed the US in a Xmas eve message, saying that if the weapons inspections are honest, the US will be shocked to find no alleged weapons. Then an analysis of the actions in N Korea, where UN monitoring equipment was removed from sealed nuclear facilities.
From Russia- Russia has begun destroying its Soviet-era chemical weapons stockpile. Next week Russia will start using the new pipeline across the Black Sea to deliver natural gas to Turkey. Then a commentary on the authorization by Bush allowing the CIA to kill international terrorist leaders.
From Cuba- Ethiopia, facing the worst famine in 20 years, is under intense pressure from multinational corporations to pay off $500 million in debt.
All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I am still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations rebroadcasting this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production costs. You can do so through the website. Many thanks to those that have donated! No Guilt!
