Well, it seems like this is a sham for democrats, liberals, greens and anyone else who doesn't agree with the Bush agenda. Bush got exactly what he wanted...which was republicans filling up the floor. Oh shit, we are in for a helluva time now. We can only hope that crazy Jesse-Helmsish stuff doesn't start happening over the next few years. More setbacks for gay rights, women, a woman's right to choose, peace. Who is still backing Bush? Did Texas and Florida vote twice? What the hell is going on?
I will say one thing: I have fallen more madly in love with California this evening. We had more Democrats on top in this election than any other state. We passed Prop. S which is a major breakthrough. Sure, alot about this leaves much to be desired: like Prop N passing for example. I am not a Democrat I am a green but looking at the Republican rule in many other states makes me happy I live in SF.
I love SF but the United States makes me sick. So glad I will be leaving this country soon. I am opting for Canada since it seems like the only place safe from the war-crazy US....but you never know, Georgie could get bored one day or run out of things to bomb. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
Peace to all of my kindered souls!!

Granted, yesterday was hardly a triumph for the sort of politx sought by imc followers...
However in my despair I sought sustenance in the results found via the green party web pages on election results...
More than 60 california greens were elected on November 6, something to be a little pleased about.
And remeber, not only were you never promised a rose garden, but no one gets outa here alive.

Relax. The people have voted. The only thing left to do is work even more fervently for your beliefs.
It seems that a lot of prople dont agree with the progressive agenda. It's up to those who won't give up (and move to Canada) to change that.
Now is not the time to give up on your convictions.

well, the thing is, I'd like any SF-IMC journalist who has posted more than one newswire story and who also considers themselves to be a democrat to raise their hand. Anyone who calls this a 'democracy' without contributing to increasing the level of democracy in the country (because democracy occurs along a spectrum - Iraq just technically held an election, and Florida still has it's list of banned black voters who never committed a felony) is not making any sort of honest statement.
it was pretty clear that N was passing, so that's no surprise. Only 2000 of the homeless in SF get that payment anyway, so that is only a fraction of them anyway. The sudden shock will change the dynamic of SF, but it won't fundementally change anything. SF has so many homeless because of it's relationship with the rest of the country.
The precarious position of parties in the senate and house is really the significant issue. Having 51 instead of 49 senators, now that Wellstone mysteriously died just like the democratic senator Carnahan died 2 years previous, gives that party really disproportionate control in setting the agenda of the body - so the republicans will be nominating all sorts of crappy judges now.

So, I guess that means you will be whining about a recount or something dimpled and dangling. The Pity Party lost big and will have a harder time begging for stolen money.
You could try Iraq, they elected a leader by a 115% majority.

Berkeley actually had a very good election result. Mayor Dean is out, and it's difficult to underscore how dramatic the effect of having Bates instead will have on the city. Bates is an ex-Cal football player who will probably neutralize the tremendous bickering and meanspiritedness of the current city council. Sometimes I would watch the first part of the meetings on TV just for entertainment, like watching wrestling. Worthington won against the rent board supported Weinberg who plans to join the Israeli army, and who apparently considered the west Bank to be part of Israel, although he was a liberal and opposed reescalating in Iraq. A journalist had a whole list of peculiar things about Weinberg to out, had he won - for instance, his foreign accent is faked.
The height limit didn't go into place.

I hate Gray Davis so much that I voted for Simon in the primary so that I would never have to vote for Davis. The predictable and just result just occurred where the CA governor race made nat'l headlines for ennui and frustration, and Camejo did quite well

I have a working solution to the SF homeless problem. Unfortunately, I don't think it will be too popular to the people who voted "no" on prop N because it requires them to make sacrifices.
The solution is this: All of the squacking Bay Area residents who keep saying how concerned you are about the homeless should move to Boise, Idaho. The cost of living is much less there, so you will be able to save more money. This money will be used to feed the homeless that have moved into your expensive Bay Area residence.
Now everyone will be happy: There will be plenty of ousing in the Bay Area, the poor will be eating well, and you will be able to say you've helped.
Start packing....

Gaffes ideas.
I spend a lot of my time in Boise Idaho. It's a beautiful little town of a city on the Snake River, peopled by hard-working, intelligent, decent people. Housing is affordable, public schools are good, air and water is clean. Plenty of jobs to be had for people who are willing to do hard work.
In short, it is a great place.
The chances for a good life for anyone moving there are excellent.
The chances of getting one of these turtles off of their backs and into a job, much less travelling to Idaho are miniscule.
Your idea is excellent Gaffes. It will of course be savaged by the 'sensitive'.

No reason to burden the good people of Boise with the human trash otherwise known as 'activist'. These people are pure losers from inception. They got steamrolled because they are nobodys with nothing to offer but negativity and criticism. They got what they deserved and they are going to continue to get their noses rubbed in the doggy shit because they aren't bright enough to figure out how to invoke changes. Oh, they'll try. It'll be the same tired old worn-out shit they've done since the beginning of time that's never worked. But sure as hell they'll do it again and again and claim they are making advances. Even more of a reason to sit back and laugh.
According to Census 2000 data, compiled at the peak of the "boom", 31.1% of Idaho households have incomes less than $25,000/year.
We lost, and we lost big. Minnesota after Paul, and it was LOST? Jebbie in Florida, and the race was LOST? Strong support? From who? Not our so-called "Democratic Leadership" (a new oxymoron, everyone).
Where was the support? Where were the No War folks, the Greens and the other "splinter party" folks? Where were you? I hope you can live with your "victory". Here, it means the Tongass is your new coffee table and ANWR is your new SUV's support system. In the Federal government, it means the opening of lands that are extremely sensitive....to oil exploration. I hope you folks are having a good laugh about the elections. I'll be glad to give any of you a tour of the North Slope and show you, personally, what your idiocy has rendered here in Alaska. Never heard of the "greater good" concept, have you green assholes?
Where were the Democratic Party's leaders? Did any of you hear a word from them? I didn't. I've written, emailed and called, time and time again. I did not get to speak to any of them, and my calls were not returned. Have you folks even bothered?
Not a solution, but finding a way to fight keeps me alive right now, keeps me from leaving the US, keeps me from bitch-slapping the next puke that spouts off at the local bar, keeps me from running, fast, out of the Democratic Party.
Here is how we do it:
The next time will come down to 4 issues: Money (inevitable), volunteerism, voices and votes. Without the first, the rest are hard to maintain. Give when and as much as you can and keep track of how much you are donating and to whom. Then, when it comes to a candidate in your area that needs support, contact the PAC and threaten to kick ass if your candidate doesn't get their help.
Crawl up the DLC's ass and BITE. Emails, letters, voice mails, faxes - TELL THEM HOW PISSED OF YOU ARE AT THEIR LACK OF LEADERSHIP AND THEIR COWARDICE. They will eventually remember that the People ARE the Party - and if they don't we get rid of them by any legal means possible.
Start your own propaganda war chest for your local, statewide and national agenda. Remember every error, every slight, every mistake on the part of the Repukes in office. Trot it out every chance you get. Make sure letters to the editor tie in with whatever asshole crap the puke has recently done affects the people in your district/state/nation. Keep a diary of all your efforts and make sure your local and state Democratic Committees are aware of your efforts. Get to know these people!
Keep the anti-war effort in the face of your community. If/when we go to war with Iraq/Iran and whoever else happens to have oil, join the protests. Photograph EVERY body bag coming off the plane at your airport and blow them up and put them on a BIG sign so your fellow citizens are aware of their neighbors/nephews/friend's kids coming home dead. Don't flinch from it - those images in Viet Nam worked very very well in protest. I know, I used the tactic.
ALWAYS support the soldiers/sailors/airmen because they don't have a choice. They signed up to serve because they believe in America. So do you. So do I. Be sure that your support is visible and vocal.
Beat the repukes at their own games. It's not that hard to develop the rhetoric necessary to wow 'em on talk shows, radio shows, in editorials and in speeches. Hit every fault, every error the repukes have ever made.
Don't "preach to the choir". DU, Democrats.com etc. are here for us day in and day out, helping reinforce our belief in a constitutional America. We like to gripe among ourselves, and that is a necessary outlet. But have the courage to get on "neutral" forums like Abuzz.com - and post, and post, and post, and argue effectively with FACTS and not name-calling or slogan-slinging. Read everything you can get your hands on that will support your argument and either remember it or write it down. If your strong point isn't writing, do it verbally! Call the damn radio pundit assholes. Marshall your FACTS, and let them have it. If they yell, YOU yell. If they try to cut you off, don't let them!! Most newspapers also have areas set aside, usually on the editorial page, for "citizen commentary". Keep writing articles based in FACT and keep sending them in. If you don't get printed, call the editor - the honcho, not the copy desk editor - and ask why. They are usually unable to give you an answer because they are owned by the pukes - but push, push, push.
Take on the fundamentalist religious fanatics of ALL stripes. One such group here rented a bus and sound system to disrupt our local Gay Pride parade. Several of us, however, notified the cops that they were doing so without a permit - it seems they felt they were above such legalities - and they were shut down before the parade even started. Take them on in print, on the radio and on public TV.
AND NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER QUIT. We WILL take back America and restore our constitution, our civil rights, and our pride.

Time to break out the monkey wrenches.
Problems develop when its realized that the money wrenches are in the hands of monkeys. Really, really inept monkeys at that.
What this election was NOT, was a republican victory. Two-thirds of all registered voters didn't vote. The overwhelming majority of these non-voters would have supported a labor or social democratic party, or almost any alternative to the present two-party system. Supporting someone running for office, simply because they're "not a republican" was not enough to motivate the overwhelming majority of the US electorate. For all practical purposes the democratic party appears finished. Most people expect an oppossiton party to be, well, in the opposition. That rules out the democrats. This election is no reason for those of us who desire a better society to despair. As noted historian Howard Zinn put it, "it's not who is in office that is important, but who is in the streets, that's important.
>>> The overwhelming majority of these non-voters would have supported a labor or social democratic party, or almost any alternative to the present two-party system. <<<<
Nonsense. People didn't vote because they were lazy. Even if you didn't support either of the candidates, there were still many propositions to vote on. If you didn't vote, then you can't bitch with the results. For example, I hated both candidates for governor but still voted for various state propositions.
If these 2/3 really would have supported a labor or social democratic party then why didn't someone from those parties run to get the 2/3 of the vote?

As far as people being too lazy, to vote, because their were propositions on the ballot is not true in all and maybe most states. The too lazy number 2/3? Come off it. If the next election sees a 20% turnout, are you going to say that's because of "laziness"? What you're afraid to admit, with the low turnouts of the last couple of decades, is that the legitimacy of this system is in question. Prior to the 70's, voter turnout seldom was less than 60%. By blaming those who don't vote, you totally excuse a society, that only offers voters a choice of one party of two wings: neanderthal and conservative. Why didn't the social and labor parties not run? It's kind of difficult to participate in elections when you don't exist.
I agree with your comment, Ken, as far as it goes, but there's more to it than simply that the Democrats and Republicans are corporate shit.
Far more significant, in my view, is the fact that capital is able (and increasingly willing) to squash all real attempts at reform through voting by virtue of its control of investment. Contrary to the line being peddled by the Green Party these days, fundamental change can not be enacted by electing new faces from new parties, however sincere and uncorrupted they may be.
The Green Party (which I'm picking on because it's the largest "third" party and the one generating the most enthusiasm among leftists), at best, can push the Democrats a step or two to the left. As such, it makes sense that those seeking to "rejuvenate" the Democrats (ha!) would support them.
But those seeking radical change through the Green Party -- which is what many Green activists claim they're all about -- are completely and utterly wasting their time.
Leftist Greens like Medea Benjamin would have us believe that capitalism will be de-fanged and the corporate order overturned if the Greens are put into power. Apparently, she and others have conned many into swallowing this hog-wash. Just read the comment sections of indymedia's around the US.
It is telling that Green electoralists never speak of attempts in other countries to enact radical change through the ballot box. Instead we get a pretty party platform and self-congratulatory talk about "internal democracy" blah blah blah.
It wasn't a lack of internal democracy that demolished Mitterand's 1981 mandate for (relatively) radical change. No -- it was a run on money markets that forced the "socialists" to adopt capital's game-plan. This can be seen over and over when leftists win office. Nelson Mandela's first budget was more austere than the last apartheid budget, because it so feared capital flight. Clinton's "peace dividend" -- a ridiculously modest proposal for an increase in social spending -- was shelved because the bond market threatened a credit crunch if he went forward with it. Lulu, recently elected in Brazil, is under intense pressure from capital -- in the form of threats of massive disinvestment -- to impose further austerity. He's already "making every effort to allay fears of investors" -- you know what that means.
The Greens, whatever their true motives, spread illusions in the system, and when all's said and done: FOR WHAT?

First of all, that means that 68.9% of Idaho households make more than $25,000/year.
Second, the cost of living in Boise is dramatically lower than that of the Bay Area. $25,000/year goes farther there.
Thirdly, what level of compensation would be acceptable to people accustomed to sleeping on the sidewalk and urinating in doorways?

How frustating it must be to you, that you didn't grow up in the Germany of the 20's or 30's, so that you could have been among the first to have donned a brown shirt and hobnailed jackboots, and gotten yourself a good job, as part of the staff at

Your e-mail handle is well chosen. first off, any increase in household incomel is caused by two effects: more two income earners per household, and inflation. You need to look at income, which fell 16% between '73 and '95. during the fake Clinton boom of the 90's income, after inflation went up 5%, which still puts us at over 10% less then what we were making 29 years ago. What prices increased more than inflation?--housing, education, medical care, and CEO compensation. What increased less than inflation?-Easy-Worker's wages. Ah come on--I was hoping you would have asked me something hard-Ken M
