The Welfare Reform Act of 1996 has a sunset date of September 30th, 2002. The house has already passed their new version of this bill, which includes funding for marriage promotion, and a requirement that people work 40 hours per week, as opposed to the 30 hours per week that is currently required. Additionally, the lifetime limit for people to receive welfare caps out in January of 2003.

Martina Gillis of the Coalition for Ethical Welfare Reform discusses these and other issues facing the working poor and people currently on welfare.

The Coalition for Ethical Welfare Reform can be reached at (415)822-6316.
