Earth First! Tree-Sit in Santa Cruz!

by President Goerge Washington
New logging in south Santa Cruz County is met by treesitting -- activists wanted!
Earth First! activists Penelope and Acorn reside high in their arboreal perch deep within the designated logging area in the recently approved Ramsey 2 T.H.P. They sit in defiance to protest the ravaging of Ramsey Gulch, an area whose steep slopes and seismic instability will, if logged, further devastate habitat for the threatened Steel Head.

On August 12, the C.A. Department of Forestry approved the 50 acre "Ramsey 2" Timber Harvest Plan (THP) in Ramsey Gulch just north of Corralitos near Mt. Madonna County Park. Redwood Empire, a subsidiary of Pacific State Industries, is an industrial timber co. born in Mendocino County and is the company conducting the timber operation. The Empire, after conducting harmful operations up North, opened an office in San Jose and set their sights on the Santa Cruz Redwoods. Just four years ago, the corporation logged Gamecock Canyon which borders Ramsey Gulch, and recieved no less than thirty violations of the State Forest Practice Rules from the C.A. Department of Forestry. Now, the Empire is extending to Ramsey Gulch where they logged just two years ago.
Earth First! activists Penelope and Acorn now reside high in their arboreal perch deep within the designated logging area. They sit in defiance to protest the ravaging of Ramsey Gulch, an area who's steep slopes and sizmic instability will, if logged, lead to intense erosion, siltation and further devastation of the very sensitive Ramsey Creek, where threatened Steel Head Trout live. Further logging will also remove the vital forest canopy that regulates the creeks temperature so that conditions in the creek are conducive to healthy spawning. Due to the fragile nature of this important ecosystem, The Santa Cruz Board of Supervisors, the Department of Fish and Game, as well as the Watsonville Water Board have staunchly opposed the new Timber Harvest Plan. None the less, the C.A. Department of Forestry has overidden their decisions, and given carte blanche to Redwood Empire to pillaige as planned.
Earth First Santa Cruz! need your help! We are currently in the process of building an entire tree villaige to halt further logging. Volunteers are need for advertising/flier distribution, food aquisition and supply, legal counsel, jail support, organizing fundraisers, collecting donations...and yes, sitting in trees! For more information on how to help: 1. Call S.C. Earth First at (831) 423-3205 !
2. Come to our weekly meetings every Tuesday at 7 P.M. at 509 Broadway (next to the Resource Center for Non-Violence)
