Though I'm not talking about this post, news from Nepal is highly censored. In the last week serious disinformation has begun to circulate about the Maoist rebels and people should keep their eyes open and their bullshit detectors turned on.

The feudal monarchy has no legitimacy in Nepal. They are resorting to tales of atrocities to make the rebels seem unspeakably evil. Since the monarchy is totally corrupt and came to power in a palace coup/bloodbath under pretty dubious circumstances, they will have to make the rebels out to be monsters in order to gain any sympathy.

The rebels, by all accounts of those who've dealt with them, are humanistic, democratic and highly idealistic. Current Nepali censorship officially forbids any sympathetic news about the rebels, any interviews, any discussion of non-miliatry aspects of the Maoists, any reporting of government defeats and indeed, any free discussion at all.

Whoever is posting these snippets is doing a great job. But just remember, this is all filtered through the censorship of a fucking monarchy backed by the CIA. US Secretary of State Powell has already pledged support to the backwards government and is hard at work planting disinformation.
