Background information about the Santa Cruz 2:

Matt Whyte and Peter Schnell, two long-time animal and earth activists, were sentenced on January 28th in federal court in San Jose, CA. Matt was sentenced to 14 months in prison, and 3 years supervised release, and Petey was sentenced to 24 months in prison, and 3 years supervised release. Matt and Peter were arrested in January of 2001 in Capitola, CA (near Santa Cruz) in possession of components for incendiary devices. Federal charges were filed a few days after their arrest, and state charges were dropped. Matt was held for around a month, and Petey for about two months, before being released on bond. Matt and Petey accepted a plea bargain in federal court in October 2001, pleading guilty to one of the two federal charges
