Gap Protest NYC
an interview with a jobs with justice activist in nyc
Arriving in New York City one finds police surrounding the Waldorf-Astoria hotel. One is overwhelmed, as usual, by the shere size of the city. I often found myself wondering how terrorists thought that their tactics of random killing could ever really have amounted to anything else but murder of innocents, since the city is so large it is like a world unto itself that seems to be able to absorb anything. Nonetheless the police are out in force and all the corporate media is reporting protests and street closings as a freeze zone is set up around the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. On the subway on my way to the Gap protest one New Yorker, an immigrant by assumption, laid accross several seats as he was a homeless man. The image of the homeless man juxtaposed against that of the Waldorf Astoria luxury was my first thought as I walked past van loads of police outside the luxury hotel. A few blocks down was a protest at the Gap that attracted a large crowd, maybe up to 1000. They were students, labor unions and workers rights advocates. Watch the video for details of the issues and background.
