Santa Cruz Art & Revolution sang an extended set of anti-capitalist Christmas carols at the Santa Cruz Farmer's Market. Some 8-10 voices serenaded shoppers of crafts and produce in the weekly open-air market, despite recent police "crack downs" on political and recreational activities in the space. No police presence was apparent today.
The off-key but well-intentioned chorus amused a small audience of appreciative passers-by without incident. Afterwards however, one nearby street performer and regular Pacific Ave entertainer voiced anger at the Art & Rev choir.
Declining to be interviewed on-camera, he accused the singers of having lied to him and cost him business while he himself tried to entertain parents with small children. "They asked me if I would mind their singing Christmas carols near by, and I said 'Sure! Great!' Then it turned out to be this self-serving political protest. This definitely hurt my business today. And the worst part is that they lied to me."
When given the suggestion to approach the singers with his grievance, he hesitated, then walked away.
Though presented with a draft of this article, SC Art & Rev point person Jeff Caplan did not respond to a later email request for rebuttal.
