I've seen that guy dressed up in the uncle sam outfit, featured in the second column to the right in the above photos, at two antiwar demos. In my opinion that guy is a problem. The other side of his sign says: "I Want You To Die For Israel". He gets a fair amount of attention, or I should say, a lot of peole take his photo. The liberal press would love to use this nimrod with his colorful attire and stupid and totally inaccurate slogan to help discredit antiwar demos.
It's one thing to see Israeli oppression of the Palestinians as needing to be combatted -- as I do -- and it's another to say that this war is being waged to protect Israel. It's not true and it smacks of anti-semitism in my opinion. More and more, Israel is being seen as a liability for US ruling interests. WASPy Bush and his oil cronies have no deep seated love for Israel. Why would they?
Anyway, just wanted to get that off my chest. I plan to confront Uncle Sam next time I see him and hope others do the same.

US and Israeli ties has nothing to do with deep seated love kooky. they are partners in genocide, they are often very useful to us and they enjoy our support and protection. lets say our government is getting some heat for supplying guns and other such support somewhere in central america, maybe el salvador. well people start to hear about it and dont know if they like there government supplying guns to kill and maim women and children. so it becomes harder to support them overtly. well israel being more outwardly fascist doesnt run into the problem so we funnel guns through them. works nicely. also israel enjoys crushing any kind of deomcratic attempts at uprising probably just as much as you do.

My point is that this war is not about protecting Israel. I know that Israel has played the role of proxy for the US by supplying weapons to regimes around the world that don't pass the scrutiny of the US congress. Guatamala and apartheid South Africa come immediately to mind. But, as such, Israel was a tool of the US more than the opposite.
Perhaps it was gratuitious to mention the WASPyness of Bush et al. but my point is that the US ruling class, I think more than ever, sees Israel increasingly as a problem. You're right, Nessie, about Israel being a hot domestic political issue. Reagan's support for Israel was more ideological than anything while the Democrats politically have far more to lose from abandoning Israel than do the Repubs. That isn't to say that Bush is about to jettison Israel, but to claim that this war is about protecting it is simply wrong and, like I said, smacks of anti-semitism which typically posits the idea that the Jews have mystical powers that need to be quashed.

i think what more appropriately sums all this up is this: the united states government (run by said criminal family) and the israeli government (run by yet another criminal clan, sometimes superficially referred to as some kind of zionist conspiracy) have made all kinds of deals and 'diplomatic' agreements which amount to genocide of the palestinian people. within each society are people who oppose the government, who agree with the government, and people who don't know either way because they are too apathetic or busy to care. how can you say something meaningful about a situation which will ultimately impact regular working people more than anyone else? more than anything else, the bush family and the sharons of the world will, at worst, end up living their life on some far-off secret or unsecret exile retirement. because we as people have not found a way to come together and say, "fuck them, we're done getting each other. we're gonna get them now."
