Locking Down to Save Santa Cruz Old Growth

by Halie (exitmsc [at] hotmail.com)
In response to loggers violent intimidation, three activists lock down to create road blockades, and supporters take a beating
Santa Cruz Earth First! supporters refused to stand by while friends occupying some of the few surviving old growth douglas firr were fired at by angered loggers or self-proclaimed THP inforcers. Sherrifs refused to write a report of the incident unless the treesitters came down, so their claims were not recognized by officials as valid.
Activists and concerned locals mobilized immediatly to plan action in response to this incident and to hopefully raise local awareness and concern for the activists' attempts at preserving one of the most beautiful redwood forests along the California coast line. Two sisters, Liv and Dune locked their arms around either side of the main entrance gate to the forest. Farther back Acorn was locked to another gate, loggers were able to penetrate this blockade by opening the gate at the hinge, but the sisters were able to delay logging trucks from passing for four hours. Public works had to be called, and they eventually had to cut the actual fence with a saw in order to clear the road. The operation on the fence put both activists within inches of the saw blade, and unnecessarily dangerous approach, which could have easily cost lives.
In the hours before officers showed up, two Redwood Empire employees attempted scaring activists off the property, but were unsuccessful. Both screeched up in pickups, one swerving to nearly hit one supporter. The men proceeded to push, knock down, punch, and drag direct supporters on the ground and over another debry blockade behind the gate. All the while the loggers engaged in a whitty dialoge about these "dirty hippies." Comments like "no suprise you pussies got chicks doing the dirty work, thats 'bout typical." I'm tempted to write out the entire dialoge for humor's sake, but this article is probably long enough already. What was interesting was that the loggers did not seem to mind the fact that I was standing there with a video camera in hand taping the whole thing. The tape got some play on FOX and NBC, where it was mutilated and distorted no doubt, but still got out there. This event has definately raised local interest, and by no means will these loggers succeed in sufficating the actions of Santa Cruz residents, and Earth First! with now three ongoing tree sits in the mountains above Santa Cruz.

As soon as I can figure out how to boot up the video footage, I will post it here, but I'm a bit of a technological oaf, so thats why I havn't yet.
