update with arrested lawyer

by ch@nce (coh [at] sfo.com)
Update from a phone conversation with Adam, one of the three lawyers illegally barred from SF's Hall of (in)Justice and arrested today.
I spoke with Adam, our staff attorney, at about 6:30pm. The following update is from that phone conversation.

After Adam was booked for battery on a police officer, he was led to a holding cell. The officer in charge was Sgt. Pallance, who refused to tell Adam who his commanding officer was.

When Adam got to his cell, he found the first jailed attorney, who was the victim of SFPD violence, face down and gasping on the floor of the holding cell. Adam reported that his throat was rubbed raw and swollen. He was later taken by a jail medic to the hospital. He was brought back 4 hrs laters.

Later, a homeless man with a camping ticket was brought to the same holding cell. When the homeless camper refused to sit down on the holding cell's bench, an SFPD member without a badge entered the cell and karate kicked the homeless man in the chest to force him to comply.

Later, as Adam was being released on his own recognizance, he reported that one of the officers processing him said that the release was spurred by calls from the offices of SF Mayor Willie Brown and District Attorney Terrence Hallinan.

Since they paid such a hefty price to gain access to 850 Bryant, the attorneys decided to stick around to maintain contact with the other nine protesters who were arrested today.

Adam reported that 5 of the remaining nine protesters had been released about an hour prior to our conversation. The remaining four will probably be charged with conspiracy — a felony — to commit misdemeanors.

Adam also reported the comments of a sherriff's police member who witnessed the first violent arrest. He said: "that guy just got an ironclad lawsuit."
