Many of us following the court proceedings relating to the July 2005 G8 protest fiasco had last heard that J. Wolfe had successfully resisted orders to turn his journalistic tapes and notes taken at the event over to a grand jury proceeding. This has been covered in several articles on Indybay. The FBI had been assigned to research whether a G8 protester had battered and injured a police officer on 23rd and Mission Street during the event. The San Francisco Chronicle reports today that anothe...

The use of federal grand juries to target journalists and political activists who are critical of the repressive domestic and international policies of the United States government is an attack on democratic free speech activity. The implications of Josh Wolf's case go well beyond a single journalist or protest. "Like the Judith Miller case or the BALCO case this is about the government's ability to take an independent and free press and treat it as an investigatory arm of the government," ...

I was surprised yesterday afternoon when a Reuters article popped onto my computer screen reporting that 53 Lebanese civilians had been killed by Israeli forces, part of the suddenly chaotic two-front battle Israel's military is fighting in the Middle East. Surprised, because I had been monitoring the day's events on CNN and hadn't heard much about that kind of swelling Lebanese death toll....

Note: This letter is not about the tragic death of UCSC Chancellor Denice Denton, but rather irresponsible journalism in the wake of her passing. Note: The intended purpose of this piece is to help various activist communities in Santa Cruz, and the UC system at large, better understand Chancellor Denice Denton’s role at the University, and to spark a community conversation about how we will move forward for the better. I have specifically chosen not to speculate about the circumstances surrounding Denton’s death, focusing instead on discussing her achievements, contextualizing her criticism, and analyzing the potential for radical soc...
