After 169 days in prison, Josh Wolf today earned the dubious distinction for incarceration intended to force him to make public videotape of a 2005 anarchist demonstration. Wolf maintains that as a journalist, it is his right to protect his sources from the government. The courts are hoping that after enough time in jail, the journalist will surrender the tapes....

Independent journalist Josh Wolf spent his 169th day in jail today, setting a new record for the longest imprisoned journalist in US history. Josh is being held in contempt of court for refusing to release unedited video footage to a grand jury investigating a political demonstration against the G8 held in San Francisco in June 2005. Unless released from 'coercive confinement' by Tuesday, February 6th, Josh Wolf will become the longest incarcerated journalist for contempt in United States history. Here is background information on the illegal trial of a peasant leader from Colombia, Sonia, from the International Herald Tribune. The IHT article parrots the false charges that she and the FARC are narcoterrorists.
On 2/15/07, there will be a meeting in the Mission to discuss this the two trials of Colombian FARC members in Washington DC. Extradited illegally to the US, they are denied the right to their own attorneys, and their witnesses have been prohibited.
