State-sanctioned, potentially illegal clearcutting continues in northern California's dwindling old-growth forests, some of the most endangered natural habitat in North America. In the Mattole watershed, roadblocks, treesits, and lawsuits have slowed Maxxam timber harvests significantly since September 2000. Ongoing direct action - and legal action - continues....

The chief culprits of clearcutting in northern California include Pacific Lumber Company (owned by Maxxam), Sierra Pacific Industries, Mendocino Redwood Company (a division of the Fisher family's Gap empire), and the California Dept. of Forestry itself, which approves Timber Harvesting Plans (THPs) after reviewing them for compliance with the Forest Practice Act and other state and federal laws....

A proposal that would allow landlords to bypass the existing Ellis Act, which prohibits rent increases on the units of evicted tenants, was discussed at a rent board hearing. By allowing just one original renter to remain in the building, the owner would be permitted to raise rents on all other units. A large protest and party marched through downtown SF from Justin Herman Plaza to the intersection of Mission & Fourth, where they danced to a live marching band and a mobile sound system. A teach-in for union members was held on May 2nd at the healthcare workers union in downtown Oakland.
