SalmonAid Fundraiser in Berkeley Saturday, March 29, 4 to 8 pm
The Central Valley fall chinook salmon run has collapsed, largely the result of increased water exports out of the California Delta, declining water quality and years of state and federal government mismanagment. The result is the unprecedented closure of ocean commercial and recreational salmon fishing off California and Oregon this year. The California Fish and Game Commission today voted to close early season salmon fishing in state waters in compliance with an emergency closure adopted at the Pacific Fishery Management Council meeting in Sacramento on March 14. This fundraiser in Berkeley this Saturday will help pay for the cost of the upcoming SalmonAid Festival in Jack London Square, Oakland, CA. from May 31 thru June 1, 2008. The goal of the festival is "promoting pride in our fish, fishermen and fisheries" and to "protect, restore, enhance and enjoy" West Coast salmon, now in their greatest crisis ever. SalmonAid is a two day music and informational festival that is being hosted by one of the largest coalitions of salmon advocates across the West – commercial and recreational fishermen, conservationists, tribes, scientists and restaurateurs.
