DESCRIPTION:HOW TO READ A FILM: A Visual Literacy Workshop for High School Teachers and
other Media Educators August 21 and 22, 2006 @ Pacific Film Archive,
University of California, Berkeley The Pacific Film Archive (PFA) in
Berkeley has gathered an impressive array of media specialists with
extensive experience in training educators for its 8th annual Visual
Literacy Workshop, HOW TO READ A FILM. The workshop offers a well-balanced
survey of visual literacy principles and practices, addressing both
theoretical/historical issues, and hands-on applications. The ultimate aim
of the workshop is for teachers to be able to use visual and media literacy
practices within the classroom to enhance curricular learning through
critical thinking and creative inquiry. Our mainstays return this
 year--included are Kathleen Tyner, author of Literacy in a Digital World;
Mindy Faber, youth-media specialist from Chicago, IL; and Stephen Gong,
Executive Director of the Center of Asian American Media. This year’s
workshop includes two special sessions: Sean Uyehara, from the San
Francisco Film Society, tackles the cultural phenomenon of the iPod; while
“Grade the News” is a classroom-based activity developed by John H.
McManus, from the School of Journalism at San Jose State University.
Registration for the event will begin immediately. There will be a
discounted rate of $75 (Standard Fees: $100) for those who register by June
15, 2006. For brochures or registration information about HOW TO READ A
FILM, please contact: Steve Seid, 510-642-5253, seidtrak@berkeley.edu, or
