DESCRIPTION: 	 Save the Soul of America March and Freedom Bus Ride! \nSan Jose,
 Hayward, Richmond, Vallejo, Oakland \nAUGUST 26- SEPTEMBER 2, 2002
 \n------------------------------------------------------------------------\nWorking
people who never shared in the economic boom of the 1990s will set out Aug.
26 on an 8-day march and caravan from San Jose. The trek will document
shameful poverty as it winds through some of the poorest sections of the
East Bay to end in Oakland, which has the Bay Area's highest rate of
poverty. We will be highlighting the sacredness of life and connecting with
the extreme poor, those facing economic troubles for the first time and
those who morally reject the growing poverty that is plaguing our country.
\nThis is the third in a series of mobilizations aimed at building a new
movement to end poverty. Billed as a Freedom Ride against poverty, it will
link up more people across California interested in uniting workers who
have been economically displaced - the young, temporary workers,
immigrants, refugees of the dot-com revolution, the poor, the homeless,
those cast aside by both the new and the old economies. \nThe Women's
Economic Agenda Project (WEAP) of Oakland is teaming up with the Community
Homeless Alliance Ministry (CHAM) of San Jose for this important effort.
The march and caravan will hold daily teach-ins along the route to focus
attention on the need to speak out against poverty as a necessary part of
saving the soul of America. \nThe Freedom Riders and Marchers will be
reclaiming the guarantees signed two generations ago by United Nations'
member states that all people are entitled to basic economic human rights,
including food, housing, education, health care and a living wage. We
understand the need for a California Poor People's Economic Human Rights
Campaign that will challenge the heartless policies motivated by greed,
corruption and the drive to blaming the poor for the ills of America. Our
survival as working and poor people rests on our ability to unite in
support of economic justice policies. This includes white-collar workers
who fear takeaways, givebacks and layoffs, blue collar workers who have
trouble sustaining a decent life for their families, unemployed workers
looking for good jobs, and all people of goodwill who want to help stop the
war being waged on the poor. \nJOIN US ON THIS MARCH AND FREEDOM BUS RIDE!!
