DESCRIPTION:ANSWER Film Series “Taliban Country” With a report and discussion on
the history of U.S. involvement in Afghanistan and the continuing
occupation For three weeks, journalist Carmela Baranowska was embedded
with eight hundred US Marines. Filmed in one of the most remote parts of
Afghanistan, where no UN or aid agencies are present. The US Marines claim
that they are “hunting Taliban and Al-Qaida”. They work alongside local
warlord and governor Jan Mohammad whose brutal militia controls the area
from where 80% of the heroin reaching Europe originates. The filmmaker
decides to travel back to Oruzgon Province independently of the US Marines
and Afghan militia. She is the only independent witness to document US
operational areas in Afghanistan in 2004. What she found is that the US
Marines act with impunity. They are conducting cordon and search operations
designed to humiliate and terrorize the local community into compliance.
This is a rare and damning insight into what US forces are doing in that
other “war on terror.” Away from the eyes of the media, humiliation and
brutalization tactics similar to those of used at Abu Ghraib are practiced
here with impunity. This documentary is a unique and unprecedented look at
the sharp edge of the war on terror in one of the most remote and
 inaccessible places on earth. 45min. 2004. $5 donation \n
