DESCRIPTION:A RARE SCREENING OF JAMES LONGLEY’S NEWEST DOCUMENTARY FILM “GAZA
STRIP”-A GLIMPSE INTO THE LIVES OF PALESTINIANS IN GAZA 2001. \n\nSan
Francisco, California—Saturday, August 24th, 7pm at Artist Television
Access, 992 Valencia Street—$5 admission\n\n	Little is known about the
Gaza Strip. To many of us in America, it is a 6 o’clock news sound bite
that conjures up images of Palestinian terrorists, bomb factories, and
endless violence. However the Gaza Strip houses approximately 1 million
people in an area of 360sq km, twice the size of Washington DC. Most of
those people are regular Palestinian families trying to earn a wage, feed
their children, and deal with the ever present and highly oppressive
Israeli occupation. \nOn Saturday, August 24th, 7:00pm, at Artist
Television Access in San Francisco, there will be a screening of James
Longley’s newest documentary film, “Gaza Strip”. This film captures
powerful scenes of life in Gaza through the eyes of Mohammed Hejazi, a 13
year old paper boy in Gaza City. In addition, Longley documents an
extremely controversial incident in February 2001 in Khan Younis refugee
camp, which fell largely through the cracks of international scrutiny. The
Israeli Defense Forces used an unidentified, powerful gas during a
firefight, hospitalizing over 200 Palestinians with severe recurrent
convulsions.\nWith no voice over to taint your experience, “Gaza Strip”
gives you the account and allows you to make up your own mind about the
state of affairs in Palestine. There will be music from San Francisco rock
 trio Fojimoto http://www.fojimoto.com and singer/songwriter John O’Brien
at 7pm. \nJames Longley was born in Oregon in 1972 and received a film
education at the University of Rochester and Wesleyan University in the
United States, and the Russian Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in
Moscow. James received the Student Academy Award from the Academy of Motion
Picture Arts and Sciences for his short documentary, “Portrait of Boy
with Dog,” about a boy in a Moscow orphanage. “Gaza Strip,” his first
feature documentary, was produced on location during the spring of
2001.\nThe FreeWheeler Music Group is sponsoring this event. Founded in
2000 by Marwan Kanafani in Berkeley, California, FMG produces records from
struggling San Francisco musicians. In 2002, FMG began organizing
political forums, film screenings and musical events focusing on the
 conflict in Palestine. \n\n
