DESCRIPTION:HITCH YOUR WAGON TO A STAR A Dramatic Reading From the Life of May
Arkwright Hutton Written and performed by Meg Bowman 5:00 p.m. - Potluck
Supper 6:00 p.m. - Program Free and open to all May Arkwright Hutton
(1860-1915) was the most flamboyant and outspoken suffragette in early
Pacific Northwest history. An independent businesswoman -- though she was
born in poverty -- and one of the most eccentric political figures of her
time, Hutton was a strong supporter of unions, orphanages, and the
Democratic party. She was a leader in the women's suffrage movement in the
Northwest, helping to gain voting rights for women in Idaho and in
Washington State, and was herself a candidate to be a U.S. Senator from
Washington. Meg Bowman is a lifelong activist in the feminist, civil
rights, and humanist movements, a retired Professor of Sociology at San
Jose State University, and the author of eleven books. Her latest book,
_Four Women_, dramatizes the lives of influential and interesting women
leaders from around the world, including May Arkwright Hutton.
Co-sponsored by Peninsula Peace and Justice Center and Women's
International League for Peace and Freedom - Peninsula Branch. \n
