DESCRIPTION: "EXTREMIST" In 2002 Denver Copwatch (a police monitoring group)
and several other human rights organizations became of aware that they were
the subject of police intelligence operations. What was more disturbing was
the label "Criminal Extremist" in their files. In 2004 Jacob Crawford
interviewed 31 people from different organizations all baring the label
"criminal extremist". The stories unveil disturbing revelations of how and
who police have maintained files on since "cointelpro" and at what extent
they must be spying on people today with the Patriot Act as a legal
justification. "Extremist" shows how intelligence gathering has been used
for decades to criminalize populations who are not status quo, people who
are poor, people who think differently. This documentary draws the
parallels between the criminalization of youth of color and activist
communities through surveillance and the distortion of intelligence.
