DESCRIPTION:John Nichols and Robert McChesney - two of the country’s foremost media
analysts and founders of the national media reform group Free Press
(http://www.freepress.net) - will discuss how the media have failed to
properly cover war and a popular election, and the burgeoning media reform
movement. They will be joined by Andrea Buffa from Global Exchange
(http://www.globalexchange.org) and Paul Jay from International World
Television (http://www.IWTnews.com). The event is part of Nichols' and
McChesney's national tour promoting their new book: Tragedy & Farce: How
the American media sell wars, spin elections, and destroy democracy.
Tragedy & Farce is both an exposé and a call to action. Nichols and
McChesney take on the corporate interests and political strategists that
influence the spin on news, and often more importantly, the omission of
news – such as CBS' decision to delay airing of a story on the
administration's manipulation of intelligence to make the case for war –
until after the Nov. 2 Election. Documenting the decline in resources and
standards for political journalism and examining the organized campaign by
the political right to control the news cycle, Nichols and McChesney
provide an essential framework by which to judge the role played by the
media in American democracy. A $5-$10 donation is requested. No one will
be turned away for lack of funds. Sponsored by: Free Press, Global
Exchange, Independent World Television, Media Alliance, New College Media
Studies MA Program, The New Press, The Ruth Group and others. For more
