DESCRIPTION:*Revolutionary Lawyering in Reactionary Times* Come to Hastings this
Saturday for the National Lawyer's Guild's 37th annual Progressive
Lawyering Day! Radical law students from seven Bay Area law schools have
planned this symposium for other law students, lawyers, and the community.
This day-long symposium offers resources, inspiration, knowledge-sharing,
and art to fuel the struggle for justice. Local civil rights lawyer John
Burris, recently named among the top 100 most influential lawyers in 2005
by the Daily Journal, will give the keynote address. Burris represented
Rodney King as well as the 119 plaintiffs who sued the Oakland Riders,
winning reforms in how the Oakland Police deal with officers who violate
citizen's civil rights. Panels and workshops include: * Soldiers in
Revolt: How Law Students Can Support GI Resisters; * Day Laborer
Struggles; * Practicing Public Interest Law and Paying Your Debt; *
International Human Rights; * Environmental Justice; * Homelessness and
Civil Rights in the Tenderloin; * Critical Race Theory; * International
Human Rights; * Queer Immigrant / Asylum Rights; and * Community Based
Lawyering: Moving from “Expert” to Resource. The symposium will close
with a reception featuring performances by the amazing spoken word and
musical artists MC Tru Bloo and Erica Ballinger, as well as food and
drinks. PLD is an excellent way to meet and make community with other
radical law students and lawyers from around the Bay Area. A full schedule
is included below, and panelists bios are attached. Join us! We need
your voice, your knowledge, and your passion. Progressive Lawyering Day
