DESCRIPTION:Everyone is invited to “ACT” for farmed animals Davis, California,
September 30, 2005 – The second in a series of educational seminars
sponsored by Animal Place and Viva!USA is coming to Davis. These Activism
& Campaign Training (ACT) workshops are designed to help participants
understand the treatment of farmed animals and vegetarianism. The ACT
workshop will be on Saturday, October 22, at the Davis Branch Library.
Topics of discussion will include a summary of California’s factory farms
in the meat, dairy and egg industries; local activism; identifying the
regulatory agencies responsible for overseeing factory farms; getting
politically involved; participating in campaigns; examining the welfare
concerns of the most common farmed animals in California; and much more.
The workshops will begin at 9:00 a.m. and end at 5:30 p.m. “Most people
are opposed to the idea of animal suffering but are simply unaware of what
takes place on factory farms,” said Lauren Ornelas, director of
Davis-based Viva!USA. “These workshops will be a perfect tool to help
them find out more and learn how they can get involved!” In addition to
Ornelas, ACT workshop speakers will include Kim Sturla, director of Animal
Place; Gene Bauston, president of Farm Sanctuary; Jack Norris, director of
Vegan Outreach; and Teri Barnato, director of the Association of
Veterinarians for Animal Rights. “Factory farms are bad news for the
animals, for communities, for the environment, and for our health,” said
Sturla. “It is time for aggressive education outreach to mobilize our
state and make positive changes for farmed animals. We think this is the
way to do that.” One additional ACT workshop is planned for this year
and will be held in Berkeley on December 3. These California workshops
will continue throughout 2006 with cities and dates to be announced. Davis
Branch Library is located at 315 E 14th Street, Davis, CA 95616. There is
no charge for this event, though pre-registration is required. Anyone
interested in attending can find a registration form at
http://www.ACTforfarmedanimals.com or may call 530-759-8482 for more
information. Animal Place is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit sanctuary for abused
and discarded farmed animals located in Vacaville, California. Since 1989,
Animal Place has been taking in animals who have been abused or neglected
and have no place else to go. Animals rescued from auctions and stockyards
and animals used in research also make up the many animals who share 60
acres of forest, meadow, pasture, hills and a small lake, peacefully living
out the remainder of their lives. In addition to providing the day-to-day
care of animals, Animal Place is an advocacy organization offering farm
tours, volunteer training and outreach activities. More information on the
sanctuary can be found online at http://www.animalplace.org. Viva!USA is a
501(c)(3) nonprofit that works for positive change through grassroots
activism and campaigns on behalf of animals killed for food. The
organization investigates the practices of factory farms to gather evidence
of animal cruelty, then structures campaigns around these findings. Youth
outreach is a vital part of Viva!USA, and their campaign materials are
produced largely for students and young activists. An international
animal-protection organization with headquarters in England, Viva!USA is
the group’s U.S.-based branch and maintains an office in Davis,
California. More information about their work can be found online at
