3rd, 2005-- ABADA-Capoeira San Francisco will display an exhibit of
photographs of capoeira and maculele in a gallery opening and artist
reception on Saturday, September 24th, 2005, 6:00-9:00pm. The photographs
were taken at ACSF’s Spirit of Brazil: Elements of Sound Performance
Concert Series held at Dance Mission Theater in March 2005. Two local
artists, Branden Johannesen and Lynnly Labovitz, donated their work for the
exhibit. The artists have given a unique gift to the community, as it is
rare to have the opportunity to see professional images of capoeira and
maculele, even as the art forms gain popularity. Over 65 photographs will
be on display at ACSF’s Brazilian Arts Center, located at 3221 22nd
Street (at Mission Street) in San Francisco. All photographs will be
available for sale to the general public, and proceeds will benefit The
Reaching All Youth (RAY) Project, ACSF’s youth program offering free and
reduced price capoeira classes, performance opportunities, youth leadership
opportunities, artist training, and bi-annual health workshops to youth
aged 5-19 from low-income families. The reception welcomes the
photographers, Mr. Johannesen and Ms. Labovitz, as well as the ACSF
performing artists who performed in Spirit of Brazil: Elements of Sound.
Like the photographers, the performers donated their work in the show so
that all proceeds could benefit The Reaching All Youth Project. Guests at
the Gallery Opening will be able to meet all the artists and enjoy
cocktails and refreshments. The photos will continue to be available for
purchase following the gallery reception on ACSF’s web site. ------\n
