DESCRIPTION:The Center for Political Education presents: Globalize Liberation; How to
Uproot the System and Build a Better World with Betita Martinez,
Starhawk, David Solnit & Chris Carlsson Tuesday, August 30, 2005 7:00 pm
522 Valencia Street (at 16th, West side, towards 17th), San Francisco We
live in an era of a new radicalism, a worldwide challenge to global empire
that has inspired millions to flood the streets in resistance and to take
action in their own communities. This movement of movements is gaining
momentum, even in the face of post-9/11 repression and war. All over the
world, people are rebelling against the rule of the few who are intent on
concentrating profit and power. Hear four of the authors of essays in the
provocative anthology, Globalize Liberation, discuss the new radicalism,
examples of effective action and practical tools for everyone to use.
Betita Martinez will speak on some of the issues raised in her essay on
Racism: U.S. Creation Myth and Its Premise Keepers. She has been a Chicana
antiracist activist since 1960 and is director of the Institute for Multi
Racial Justice. Starhawk is a longtime direct, ecological, peace and
global justice organizer and author of Webs of Power; Notes from the Global
Uprising and The Fifth Sacred Thing. Chris Carlsson will speak on
"Radical Politics: Assuming We Refuse, Let’s Refuse to Assume." He helped
launch "Critical Mass" bicycle activism and cofounded Processed World
Magazine. David Solnit, editor of the anthology is the author of the essay
"The New Radicalism: Uprooting the System and Building A Better World." He
is a veteran of mass direct-action organizing and is currently working to
popularize a people power strategy to stop the Iraq war and occupation. .
The Center for Political Education: building strong movements and the left
through education, analysis, theory and activism. Unless otherwise noted,
all events are at The Center for Political Education at 522 Valencia
Street, 3rd Floor San Francisco (near 16th Street, one block from the 16th
