DESCRIPTION:Join us on Oct. 22nd 2005 at the San Francisco Maritime Park on the Tall
Ship Balclutha for an exciting evening exploring 19th Century Tall Ship
history of San Francisco. The Tall Ships of San Francisco is a collection
of 1,500 daguerreotype (glass plate) photographs discovered in 2003 and not
seen by the public in over 100 years! This incredible collection of tall
ship photographs documents the largest ships of sail built on the U.S. west
coast and home ported at San Francisco. Over 65 blue water tall ships,
never before documented in history books or seen in Maritime Museums will
be shown to the public. Included in this magnificent fleet of ships that
called San Francisco home, was THE only true Clipper Ship built on the west
coast, The Western Shore c.1874. This magnificent clipper sailed out of San
Francisco setting several sailing records that have not been bested to this
day. One of the Western Shore’s Captains would be mortally injured while
being towed out of the bay, bleeding to death on the deck while the ship
drifted precariously close to the rocky beach of Alcatraz Island. Finally
in 1878 under suspicious circumstances, the Western Shore sunk quite
dramatically right outside the Golden Gate on the Duxbury Reef complex.
This is the history of but one of over 65 tall ships, just discovered! All
this history and more will be presented to the public for the first time!
Discovered along with the these previously unpublished images were shipyard
blueprints hand drawn on onion skin and hand drawn shipwreck maps over 4’
tall. All this history and much more will be shown to the public in a one
hour narrated slide show presentation held on board the Tall Ship
Balclutha. Show time is 6:00 pm. As seating is limited onboard ship we
encourage you to make reservations. Please see this link for further
 details and reservation contacts
