DESCRIPTION: Tell your SF Supes to fund Public Access Ch 29 with a sustainable
model! We have a Comcast contract coming before the Supes on Tues, 15Aug
which gives the city a bunch of cash, but which will bankrupt the Public
Access Ch. 29 operations. Briefly: the funds will fund capital outlays
(equipment), but fails to fund the staff and infrastructure to use and
deploy the equipment. So the Comcast deal makes sure we have all the
equipment, but NO staff to run it - ergo, the only community media
channel in SF, Ch 29, will shut down next year because it doesn't fund the
bodies to OPERATE the station -so Comcast wins and SF loses it's only
Public Access channel! All SF'ers needed for this demonstration and letter
signing party - you don't have to be a SF resident, or a registered voter
or of a certain age to participate! We need ALL ages, especially teens and
elders. You just have to care about community media and about preserving
one voice of the community on television. Need more info: Media
Alliance Public Access Ch 29 We need you to act in 2 ways: 1. Email
or call your supervisor (list at bottom) to tell your Supe to Reject
the current Comcast contract deal and go back to the negotiating table to
get sustainable funding for the continued operations of Public Access Ch
 29. Comcast can afford this, but we need to tell our supes that it's
important. It's really easy to call (on the weekend there are message
machines, and otherwise, a nice person just takes your input over the phone
in less than five minutes. 2. Be at the demonstration! Monday @ Noon
to 1pm @ City Hall (Polk side) Come for five minutes, come for 20 - sign a
letter to your supe to communicate how you feel and I'll hand deliver it.
Demonstration on Monday August 15th at High Noon on the Polk Street Steps
of City Hall. We have the opportunity to bring attention to this Comcast
sweetheart renewal deal to the attention of the Voters of San Francisco
and the people of California. Many of us are able to produce shows of
many diverse opinions, points of view and ethnicities because of the
existence of Channel 29. A renewal of this contract would probably mean
the end of Public Access television as we know it. As it stands, the
contract renewal will NOT fund Public Access with sustainable operational
funds. It is YOUR obligation to come out in support of re-negotiation
of the Comcast agreement so that Public Access television can be properly
funded and brought up to speed in the 21st Century. The City needs to
re-negotiate this contract so Public Acces Ch 29 is sustainably funded.
This is the first opportunity in 40 years since Pat Weaver started
stringing cable on our phone poles to negotiate a deal that is right for
all San Franciscans. We have arranged for Channels 2, 4, 5, 7 & 11 to
send news crews to cover this demonstration and will probably get 48, 26,
and 14 to appeal to the Latino and Asian communities. If you can take a
few minutes out of your day to come out and show the Supervisors that you
care about this city, it can help make a difference. We need someone
there who can translate our position statement into Spanish and Chinese
and Russian and all other impacted communities for the media. Contact
 - 415 298-9343 this weekend and it will also be the on-site telephone
number for Monday. SF Supervisors' Contact Info: Supervisor Jake
