DESCRIPTION:Join us in kicking off Halleck's new book Hand Held Visions: The Impossible
Possibilities of Community Media. Halleck will share her visions for taking
the power back and facilitate a discussion on the future of independent
media.\n\nDee Dee Halleck is one of the pioneers of radical alternative
video. As cofounder of Paper Tiger TV and Deep Dish Network and one of the
principle shapers of Indymedia, she has tirelessly organized for more
access to the means of media production since the 1960s. She has had a hand
in collectively producing 15 years of radical video critiques of mass
culture and politics, as well as, leading media workshops with elementary
school children, reform school youth and migrant farmers. Her films
include: "Children Make Movies" (1961); "Mural on Our Street" which was
nominated for an Academy Award in 1965; "The Gringo in Mañanaland," a
feature film about stereotypes of Latin Americans in U.S.\n\n"Above all,
these pages bring us headfirst into the process of making radical
alternative video. This collection is an indomitable call to arms, to
throw our energies into radical alternative media, and an extraordinary
memoir of what that has meant. It is a call to courage, and a reminder of
how much courage and vision we need." -John Downing\n \nBYOB. OPEN
