DESCRIPTION:Amy Goodman to Speak at Berkeley Benefit “Independent Journalists
Struggle to Reveal Truth in War Time” BERKELEY, CALIF. (March 29, 2005)
 – Fans of Amy Goodman, award-winning journalist and host of the popular
Democracy Now! radio and TV news program, will get a chance to see her live
on Friday, April 22, when she will present a behind-the-scenes view of what
it’s like to be an independent journalist in a media landscape dominated
by corporate giants and an administration that many feel is overtly hostile
to dissent. Also on the program will be independent documentary
photographer and filmmaker Mark Brecke, recently returned from being
embedded with the Sudanese Liberation Army and documenting the genocide
occurring in the Darfur region of Sudan. Brecke will present critically
acclaimed images and footage from that country. Goodman will also be
showing a new hard-hitting documentary “Independent Media in a Time of
War,” which is composed of a speech given by herself, illustrated by
clips of mainstream media juxtaposed with rare footage from independent
reporters in Iraq. The program, “See No Evil: Amy Goodman on Media in a
Time of War,” is a benefit for Berkeley Community Media, the public,
education and government access television station for the city of Berkeley
and the Communication Arts and Sciences small school at Berkeley High
(CAS). CAS is a program created by a group of teachers, students, and
parents that nourishes and develops the whole student, with an emphasis on
social justice, media literacy, communications skills and communication
technologies. At a time when California’s budget deficit has led to cuts
in funding for many community resources, Amy Goodman and Mark Brecke have
generously offered to help raise the funds needed to continue this
important work. “See No Evil” will be presented on April 22 at 8:00
o’clock at the Florence Schwimley Little Theater (1920 Allston Way on the
Berkeley High School campus). Tickets are $15.00 and can be purchased in
person at Berkeley Community Media, 2239 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Black
Oak Books in Berkeley and A Clean Well Lighted Place for Books in San
Francisco. You can purchase tickets by credit card by calling 510-848-2288.
