DESCRIPTION:"The Landless" ("Los Sin Tierra"): Part homage to the “world’s most
successful people’s movement” and part condemnation of the social
conditions that gave rise to it, Miguel Barrios’s film traces the rise of
Brazil’s Landless Workers Movement (MST), whose strategy is to peacefully
and legally take over and set up encampments on unproductive land, which is
then redistributed among the occupying families. The battle has been
hard-fought, as many landowners have organized themselves into paramilitary
groups. Over 1600 workers have been killed in the last 15 years. "The
Landless", produced by Pedro Almodóvar, shows history being made by the
most impoverished residents of a country that has the highest rate of
economic inequality in the world. 75 minutes, 2003. Charlotte Casey of
Friends of the MST will speak and lead an open discussion after the film.
$5 - $10 suggested donation. Sponsored by Peninsula Peace and Justice
Center, World Centric, and Peace Umbrella of Unitarian Universalist Church
of Palo Alto. For more information: http://www.peaceandjustice.org //
