DESCRIPTION:IDEX invites you to the second International Development Series (IDS) panel
of 2005. With the date for elections just announced for March 31st, we
bring together a panel to discuss current political, social, health and
economic conditions in Zimbabwe. The outlook for free and fair elections
"appears bleak," as major news outlets are terming it, and there are
already widespread reports of voters purged from the rolls. HIV/AIDS rates
remain astronomical. And the economy is plagued by high unemployment
levels, poverty and the highest inflation rate in the world. Given these
challenges, how can NGOs and supporters here continue to assist in efforts
to effect social change? What are the constraints, risks and realities for
ongoing human rights work? And how do we keep the U.S. public engaged –
intellectually, politically, and financially – in supporting
Zimbabweans’ struggles for democracy given these realities and risks?
Come join us for this engaging panel discussion on the present and future
of Zimbabwe. Panelists: David Katzenstein MD, Professor of Infectious
Diseases and Geographic Medicine, Stanford University Muadi Mukenge,
Program Officer for Africa, the Global Fund for Women Chris Paterson,
Assistant Professor of Media Studies, University of San Francisco Pete
Stanga, Executive Director, IDEX Moderated by Sarah Dotlich, Africa
