 Slaves to Fashion: Poverty and Abuse in the New Sweatshops  Chie Abad, 
 former sweatshop worker  with special guest performances    Learn about 
 historic proposed legislation in San Francisco that would prohibit the city 
 from purchasing sweatshop goods.  Find out what you can do to help improve 
 wages and working conditions for sweatshop workers around the world.  This 
 is the beginning of an exciting sweat free legislative campaign that will 
 include cities across the Bay Area.  Robert Ross is Professor of Sociology, 
 Faculty Director, and Director of the International Studies Stream at Clark 
 University.  He is a leading scholar on sweatshop conditions in the 
 American apparel industry and its relations to sweatshop conditions around 
 the world. His latest work is Slaves to Fashion: Poverty and Abuse in the 
 New Sweatshops .  Carmencita "Chie" Abad spent six years as a garment 
 worker on the Pacific island of Saipan, a U.S. territory.  She endured 
 wretched conditions, frequently working 14-hour shifts in order to meet 
 arbitrary production quotas for her employer.  Chie was instrumental in 
 forcing 26 major retailers to settle a lawsuit in September 2002 to improve 
 conditions in Saipan.                       $5 donation at the door.  No
