DESCRIPTION:Thursday, January 20, 2005 The Future of Energy: Transitioning from Fossil
Fuels to Renewables Join us for a panel discussion moderated by former PUC
Commissioner Loretta Lynch, and featuring leading energy experts Rory Cox
of Pacific Environment; Paul Fenn of Local Power; and David Room of Post
Carbon Institute. Fossil fuels have been the defining commodity of the last
150 years of development, fueling everything from the Industrial Revolution
to the Information Age. However, there are serious concerns about its
future. Its extraction threatens ecosystems, and its projects often result
in human rights violations. Burning it leads to air pollution and global
warming. Wars are fought over it. And there are questions about how much of
it is remaining. Closer to home, California is now considering importing
liquid natural gas for the first time ever to fuel our energy needs. While
governments and communities grapple with these questions, a quiet
revolution is occurring in our energy grid. Energy from the wind, the sun,
and other natural sources is being harnessed, in spite of a federal
government that supports fossil fuels. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is
saying publicly he plans to aggressively pursue renewable energy, as a
majority of Californians say they support it. States like California and
countries like China are making commitments to develop more solar, wind and
other clean energy projects, following in the footsteps of Western Europe.
But are these efforts enough to sustain our way of life? Are they being
developed fast enough? What role can local communities play to accelerate
clean energy development? How can community groups prepare for energy
constrained future? Join us for a discussion of these issues that will
define a way of life for generations to come. This is a benefit for the
Post Carbon Institute. Time: 7 pm - 9 pm. Location: Ecology Center,
2530 San Pablo Ave, near Dwight Way, Berkeley. Cost: $5 to $15 Sliding
Scale. No one turned away for lack of funds.. Info: 510-548-2220 x233.\n
