DESCRIPTION:Dear Friends,  The Institute of International Studies' Rockefeller  
 Community in Contention Program, in conjunction with  The Mendocino 
 Institute, cordially invites you to a  workshop this Saturday, December 
 11th on  "The Commune:  Histories, Legacies and Prospects in  Northern 
 California", from 9am to 5pm in 223 Moses  Hall, on the Berkeley campus. 
 Following is the  schedule for Saturday (also attached).  9.00-10.30 am 
 Keynote: Genesis  Timothy Miller, “California  Communes in Historical  
 Context Moderator and discussant, Michael Watts  11.00-12.30Morning panel: 
 "Lived Reality" Moderator,  Janferie Stone  2.00-3.30Afternoon panel: 
 "Crisis and Legacy"  Moderator, Richard Walker  3.45-4.45General 
 discussion: "Prospects for  communalism"  Moderator, Iain Boal  
 4.45-5.00Closings  The workshop, which is open and free to the public,  
 brings together communards, urban and rural, who  participated in the great 
 efflorescence of utopian,  communal and cooperative ventures beginning  in 
 the mid 60s but having deep roots in the New World.  Drawing on the 
 experiences of the participants, the  workshop aims to open up a range  of 
 issues central to an understanding of the past and  future of communalism, 
 and its lived experience: the  long capitalist boom and the  cold war 
 family; land, property and anti-capitalist  projects; the  class, racial 
 and sexual politics of communes; the  city and/versus the  country; 
 architecture and the politics of space;  reproduction,  child-rearing and 
 education; communes and the state  ("code wars", the  political economy of 
 cannabis); foodways, barter and  gleaning; communes  and environmentalism; 
 underground presses, music and  the  counterculture; charisma, leadership 
 and  anti-authoritarianism;  governance and decision-making; the causes of 
 crisis  and dissolution;  the fate of the commons in a neo-liberal world.
