DESCRIPTION:Thu, Dec 9, 2004 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm Going Local: The Power of
Supporting Locally Grown Food Ecology Center 2530 San Pablo Ave near
Dwight Way Berkeley More food is produced today than ever before, yet
poverty exists alongside obesity, food banks struggle to feed the hungry,
food contamination kills more people every year, while small family farms
face extinction under industrial agriculture. But it doesn't have to be
that way. Join Food First at a panel discussion featuring three food policy
experts and activists who will explore the power of supporting locally
grown food in the face of mounting industrialization of the world's food
system. Brian Halweil of the Worldwatch Institute in Washington DC, will
discuss how simple shifts in eating habits to locally grown foods delivers
superior taste, is better for people's health, the livelihoods of small
farmers, and the global environment. His discussion is based on his new
book, Eat Here: Reclaiming Homegrown Pleasures in a Global Supermarket.
Christine Ahn will discuss the challenges of fighting hunger today based on
the new Food First report she co-authored, "Beyond the Food Bank." She has
written extensively on food and farm policy issues for Food First. Brahm
Ahmadi, the co-founder of Oakland's People's Grocery that brings healthy
food to Oakland's low-income community will discuss how this small
community-based organization is transforming Oakland resident's connection
to food, land, justice and their communities. Cost: Free. For more
