DESCRIPTION:Elia Arce’s, The Fifth Commandment, explores the personal ethics and
spiritual beliefs surrounding the act of killing within the framework of
the US military. How would human consciousness need to evolve in order for
war to cease? Of particular interest to her, is the disparity between a
person’s actions and a person’s spiritual and moral beliefs. For the
project, Arce conducted a series of interviews with individuals from the
military community in the Bay Area, San Antonio and Houston. Of Central
American origin, Elia Arce uses film/video, theater, dance, and
installation to explore complex social and political themes. This
performance installation in progress, crafted from interviews with active
military personnel returning from Iraq, veterans of other wars and military
family members, will explore the personal ethics and beliefs surrounding
the crime of crimes. Oakland’s satirical guerilla performance crew,
HeadRush, will open. For Tickets: http://www.ybca.org or 415.978.ARTS
