DESCRIPTION:Consumer confidence has been low since September 11. A successful war
against Iraq was supposed to be the only way to restore that confidence -
and our happiness. "Surplus: Terrorized Into Being Consumers" asks, has is
worked? Is shopping our salvation? If it is, why is the lifestyle of
consumerism a source of such rage today? How come the privilege of buying
goods does not automatically lead to happiness? "Surplus" portrays this
issue from an emotional perspective, with clips filmed in the U.S., India,
China, Italy, Sweden, Hungary, Canada and Cuba. They include George W.
Bush’s famous “shopping-speech”, calling for a war against terrorism
that deters the nation from the fear of consumption, Fidel Castro
responding with hymns to the anti-consumerist, advertising-free island of
Cuba, and Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer preaching that the computer will
give us peace on earth by “bringing people together”, while Adbuster
Kalle Lasn warns that advertising pollutes us mentally, that
over-consumption is unsustainable, and that we are running out of oil. The
film will be followed by an open discussion led by Kevin Danaher,
co-founder of Global Exchange. $5 - $10 suggested donation; sponsored by
Peninsula Peace and Justice Center, World Centric, and Peace Umbrella of
Unitarian Universalist Church of Palo Alto.\n
