DESCRIPTION:SMASH AND GRAB IS PUTTING IT LIGHTLY On Friday, November 12, author, poet,
songwriter, the provocative Bambi Lake will be making an overdue debut at
7:00 p.m at the Wired Wash Café since her disappearance from literary
circles for nearly a decade. She will read from her latest collection of
poetry, Smash and Grab, published by Magenta Press of San Francisco. Smash
and Grab is the sequel to Lake’s, The Unsinkable Bambi Lake, which is now
out of print and has since become a fixture on the reading list as a
“must read” for not only the transgender community, but anyone
questioning their sexuality. It is a collection of poems drawn from an
impressionistic memoir of the spoken word poetry venues and parties during
the wild nineties in San Francisco. Bambi’s quest has been described by
Exene Cervenka, front-woman from the band X that stood out in the early
‘80\'s Los Angeles punk scene, as “life that has been a protest march
in high heels.” Lake continues to influence and inspire her readers by
approaching any and all insecurities to forcefully overcome any fears of
true individuality. “It’s good to see that Bambi has put out books
about her life because it’s been one of a kind and an inspiration for
anyone who wants to stand up for themselves,“ notes famed spoken word
artist and musician, Henry Rollins in his introduction to Smash and Grab.
The reading promises to be an inspiration to writers in search of an inner
voice that begs to be heard throughout the Santa Cruz community to uphold
its progressive history of transgender issues. \n
