DESCRIPTION:Poesy Magazine and website (poesy.org) issue 26 was released September 24th
and there will be a celebration to kick off the issue at the Wired Wash
Cafe at 7:00 p.m on Friday, October 22nd. The poetry reading will showcase
four authors from issue 26, including Gerald Nicosia, klipschutz, Lisa
Ortiz, and Kirk Glaser. A short open mic will follow, welcoming audience
participation for a rewarding night of entertainment. The main feature of
the night is Gerald Nicosia. Nicosia, who will be making the trek down to
Santa Cruz from Corte Madera, is a poet, novelist, playwright, critic, and
historian who has taken part in the literary communities of Chicago, Los
Angeles, and the San Francisco Bay Area. Nicosia is best known for his
biography of Jack Kerouac, Memory Babe as well as Home to War: A History of
the Vietnam Veterans Movement. He will be followed by klipschutz, another
veteran of the San Francisco poetry community. Lisa Ortiz (La Honda) and
Kirk Glaser (Santa Cruz) will represent our local Santa Cruz County talent.
While listening to the poetry, patrons are welcome to roam to the upper
level of the café, where two tables of local photography and fine art by
Dustin Matchett, Donna Kuhn, and her son, Evan, will be on display.
The night will be a collaboration of words and images — a theme that has
been the dominating focus of the magazine since relocating its headquarters
from Boston to Santa Cruz in January 1999. The mission statement on the
poesy.org website relays the message, \"the goal is to add the extra
element of depth to the poems by drawing the reader in with accompanying
artwork on each page to leave a lasting impression.” Stop by and listen
to some poetry while you browse the art as you begin your journey into the
excitement of downtown Santa Cruz on Friday night. \n
