FOR THE ARTS is proud to present, as part of our Fall 2004 Literary Series,
a paired reading with two exciting young Bay Area fiction writers, Samina
Ali and Lysley Tenorio, on Monday October 11, 2004 at 8:00 PM. Entitled
New Fiction, this reading presents two voices that are defining the
multicultural fabric of contemporary America. Samina Ali’s first novel,
Madras on Rainy Days, was published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux earlier
this year, and Lysley Tenorio’s stories have been published in The
Atlantic Monthly, The Chicago Tribune, and Best New American Voices 2001.
Ali uses lyrical, haunting prose and richly drawn characters to explores
both the upside and the downside of being a first generation Muslim
Indo-American woman, trapped between the demands of competing cultural
heritages. Tenorio’s writing is sophisticated, and his humorous and
insightful perceptions into his own Filipino cultural heritage has enabled
him to approach stories with campy premises with integrity and genuine
emotion. Admission is $5 - $15 sliding scale. Celebrating our 40th
Anniversary in 2005, Intersection for the Arts is San Francisco’s oldest
alternative art space and provides a place where provocative ideas, diverse
art forms, artists and audiences can intersect one another. At
Intersection, experimentation and risk are possible, debate and critical
inquiry are embraced, community is essential, resources and experience
are democratized, and today’s issues are thrashed about in the heat and
immediacy of live art. $5 - $15 (your choice) sliding scale \n
