DESCRIPTION:The Bay Area is one of the stops of the exciting\nand inspiring
 cross-country caravan---the TACO BELL TRUTH TOUR---which will\nvisit
fifteen cities after leaving Florida in just a few weeks. We are\nplanning
a great rally and march with speaches from the Immokalee Workers, UFW
\nco-founder, DOLORES HUERTA, members of local communities fighting similar
\nstruggles and many others.\n\nThe rally will be followed by a benefit
social event featuring music, food, and\nmore great speakers. The benefit
will start at 7 pm at 255 Potrero St.\n\n+++JOIN THE ORGANIZING COMMITTEE
FOR THE SF ACTION+++\n\nWe need your help to pull this event off. Our next
planning meeting is\nscheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 20th at 7 pm @ Global
Exchange (2017 Mission St.\n#303).\n\n+++TRAVEL TO LA AND IRVINE FOR THE
NATIONAL CONVERGENCE+++\nThe Taco Bell Truth Tour will culminate on March
10th and 11th in LA and Irvine\nfor a major convergence to protest at the
Corporate Headquarters of Taco Bell.\n\nBuses will be organized to
transport people from the Bay Area down to LA/Irvine\nfor the convergence.
Housing will be provided. For more info on the buses,\nplease email
 ciwbayarea@hotmail.com or call (510)646-1887.\n\n   ++++Worker
Solidarity!++++Justice For Farm Workers!++++\n\n\n\n*Why we protest Taco
Bell?\n\nTaco Bell is one of the principal buyers of the tomatoes picked by
the\nfarmworkers in Immokalee, Florida. They buy the tomatoes from the
local\ncontractors only paying 40 cents for every 32 lb. bucket of tomatoes
to the\nmigrant workers, the same rate paid in 1978. "The tomatoes Taco
Bell buys for\nits tacos and Chalupa's are produced in what can only be
described as sweatshop\nconditions," said Lucas Benitez of the Coalition of
Immokalee Workers (CIW),\none of the tour's organizers. "Twenty years of
picking at sub-poverty wages, no\nright to overtime pay, no right to
organize or join a union, no health\ninsurance, no sick leave, no paid
holidays or vacation, and no pension is a\nnational disgrace."\n\nThe CIW
is proposing that through negotiations Taco Bell pay 1 cent more
per\npound of tomatoes, passing the extra penny on to the pickers, which
 would\nnearly double their pay.\n\nThe CIW is organizing a cross-country
tour to bring attention to and drum up\nsupport for their struggle. The
Taco Bell Truth Tour will be stopping in San\nFrancisco on March 8th and
will culminate with a major convergence in LA/Irvine\nto protest the
Corporate Headquarters of Taco Bell on March 10th and 11th.\n\nAnd you are
invited to be part of this historic caravan! There are a number\nof ways
that you can participate -- you could join the\nImmokalee workers for the
entire two-week tour, or you could jump into the\ncaravan at any point
along the way (we are especially encouraging people to\njoin us on the
California leg from San Francisco to LA/Irvine), or you could\ncome for an
exciting two days of action at the national convergence in
Los\nAngeles/Irvine, CA, on March 10 and 11 as we march on Taco
Bell.\n\nWho is Coalition of Immokalee Workers?\nThe Coalition of Immokalee
Workers (CIW), a farmworker organization based in\nImmokalee, Florida, has
asked to meet with Taco Bell representatives to\ndiscuss the working and
living conditions of the farmworkers who pick Taco\nBell's tomatoes.\n\nfor
more information, please visit: http://www.ciw-online.org\n\nfor questions
about the Bay Area action, email ciwbayarea@hotmail.com or call
