DESCRIPTION:Friends & Activists, Democracy Matters invites you to our first annual
West Coast Summit for Fair & Clean Elections Rally 2:00 pm, Saturday
9/18 UC Berkeley’s Boalt Law School (on Bancroft) Support Measure H!
Make history with Democracy Matters’ students from across the West
Coast to clean up the crooked political process nationwide. Come support
Berkeley’s Yes! on Measure H campaign to make Berkeley the first city in
the country to pass full public financing of elections! Join Democracy
Matters’ Founder, NBA Player Adonal Foyle, come see live political
theater and music, and be a part of this historic movement to change
elections and TAKE BACK DEMOCRACY! Democracy Matters is a national,
non-partisan, non-profit organization of students and professors committed
to strengthening American democracy. Democracy Matters is particularly
committed to meaningful campaign finance reform to ensure all citizens,
regardless of wealth, have an equal voice in the political process.
http://www.democracymatters.org Measure H will Increase the Diversity
of Candidates. Berkeley’s current mayor spent $236,000 to win the
election, while the average winning city council campaign costs
$35,000. Without public financing, only wealthy candidates, or those with
connections to big donors can run. Measure H will Level the Playing
Field. All candidates will run with the same amount of money, ensuring that
elections are based on candidates’ ideas, experience and community
support, not their abilities as fundraisers. Measure H Will Make Elected
Officials Responsive. When campaigns are paid for by the voters—instead
of special interests—officeholders are responsive to the voters, not
beholden to special interests. Measure H is Proven, Tested and Sound.
Similar reforms in Maine and Arizona have lead to a three-fold increase in
minority candidates, a 25% increase in women candidates, and more contested
elections. Maine even became the first state in the country to adopt
Universal Healthcare as a consequence. Help Make History in Berkeley! By
passing Measure H in Berkeley, we help state and national reform efforts!
Please support Measure H – Because Democracy Matters! For more
