DESCRIPTION:Sat. & Sun., Aug. 21 & 22, 10–5 pm This workshop provides an overview of
the history, politics, and how-to of the micro-radio movement. Learn how to
build FM-broadcast transmitters (and other related items such as antennas)
and set up a low-power (15–100 watt) community radio station capable of
covering a broadcast radius between 5 and 15 miles, depending on power,
terrain, and antenna height. The ins and outs of Web radio broadcasting are
also covered. Instructor Stephen Dunifer is the founder of Free Radio
Berkeley and International Radio Action Training Education (IRATE).
Disenchanted with the direction of mainstream media, he launched his own
unauthorized FM radio station from the hills outside Berkeley in the spring
of 1993. Considered the pioneer of the micro-radio movement, he focuses his
energy on offering workshops and technical support and distributing simple,
inexpensive radio equipment to community radio activists around the world.
 $85/Film Arts Foundation members; $150/others. \n
