 McDonald  A coming of age story about a thirteen year old African-American 
 girl named Claudia Jackson, who struggles to bring about ethnic 
 cohesiveness and racial understanding in her predominately white, middle 
 school through the rise of a Culture Club. ***This film will be screened in 
 replace of CARMIN'S CHOICE***  CRITTER ISLAND (Animated Short, USA 2003) 3 
 min. - DIR: Althea Brown  Critter Island opens inside the dimly lit 
 bathroom of a Harlem retirement home. This moving adventure tells the story 
 of the love-hate relationship between Mario and Vicki, two kid roaches from 
 rival gangs who are accidentally washed down a water-drain. Just before 
 being washed away, Mario and Vicki overhear that the dreaded exterminator 
 is coming to fumigate their home in three days.  SPECIAL DAY (Short, USA 
 2001) 12 min. - DIR: Anna Dudley  Set at a whites-only lunch counter in the 
 1960's, Special Day tells the story of William, one of many black 
 participants in a local civil rights sit-in. Torn between commitment to his 
 fellow protestors and the duties of marriage and parenthood, William faces 
 a difficult decision: participate in the civil rights movement in the hopes 
 of a better future and risk all that he has worked for and achieved, or do 
 nothing, and maintain the status quo.  HAIR DAZE (Short, USA) - Vertna 
 Bradley  RAVISHING RASPBERRY (Animated Short, USA 2003) 10 min. - DIRS: 
 Shawnelle Gibbs and Shawnee Gibbs  Nyesha is an attractive 
 nineteen-year-old woman consumed with acquiring the finer things in life. 
 She spends her days watching music videos and abiding to the lyrics of her 
 favorite hip-hop artist Sexxy Lexxy, whose hottest single unabashedly 
 demands young women to "Make That Cheddar." Like many urban consumers, 
 Nyesha makes most of her spending decisions based on commercials in between 
 music videos and ads in trendy magazines.  FIRST CUT (Short, USA) - Venus 
 De Milo Thomas  JACOB'S SOUND (Short, USA 2001) 15 min. - DIR: Anna Dudley  
 "Jacob's Sound" is the story of a black deaf clown and his unrequited love 
 for a pretty schoolteacher he sees in the audience year after year at one 
 of the circus stops. He was never taught how to speak so he must find 
 alternative ways to express his love. His friend/mentor, Lucky, tries to 
 tell him to just try and speak but Jacob is too embarrassed.  DUKA'S 
 DILEMMA (Documentary, Southern Ethiopia 2001 - Hamar w/English Sub-titles) 
 87 min. DIRS:Jean Lydall and Kaira Strecker  Duka is a married woman and 
 mother of five young children, living in Hamar, Southern Ethiopia. Ever 
 since her husband married a beautiful, young, second wife, Duka has been in 
 a state of emotional turmoil. Among the Hamar, who live with herds and 
 cultivate small fields of sorghum in their remote, bush-covered country, 
 men are allowed to marry more than one wife, but only a few men ever do so. 
  Duka wonders why her husband married again; did he find her too old, or 
 was he turned off because of her chronic malaria? Also, she doesn't know 
 what to make of the new wife who is silent and never expresses her feelings 
 except in rage? And on top of this, her mother-in-law keeps making trouble 
 and is angry with her son for marrying a second wife behind her back.  \n
