DESCRIPTION:Dispatches From Rebel Mexico Saturday, July 24th 7pm FREE AK Press
674-A 23rd St Oakland, CA 94612 Come join us for an evening of radical
films from Mexico! A fundraiser to benefit the production of a new
documentary about the construction of rebel civil instiutions - and a new
basketball league - in Zapatista communities in Chiapas. On saturday,
July 24, U.S. born, Mexico based filmmaker Greg Berger will present
excerpts from his ongoing interactive video tour, "Dispatches From Rebel
Mexico." Films excerpted will include: "Tlalnepantla: The Price of
Democracy" about the attempt of an indigenous town in Morelos state to
declare itself autonomous, and the tragedy of subsequent police
repression; "Atenco: The Machete Rebellion" which chronicles the
successful struggle of a farming town adjacent to Mexico City against a
proposed airport which would have confiscated communal land established
as a result of the Mexican revolution; and "Gringothon," a humorous short
film about a lone gringo's attempt to raise money in the streets of
Mexico City to support a guerrilla insurgency in the United States. All
proceeds from the event will benefit the production of Greg's new
documentary on basketball in the highlands of Zapatista Chiapas. In
recent years, civilian supporters of the Zapatista movement have begun
building their autonomy through the construction of indpendent, indigenous
controlled, civil institutions. One of these institutions is the
Autonomous Rebel Zapatista High School, whose "education promotors"
(teachers-in-training) have formed a highly successful basketball league.
A new documentary will follow the basketball league and explore this new
phase of the Zapatista's evolution, during which rebel indigenous
communities have begun the arduous task of creating local, concrete,
alternatives to the global neoliberal order. This new documentary will
also make the story of the Zapatista struggle accesible to a whole new
audience: the world's millions of basketball fans.\n
