DESCRIPTION:Frameline 28, the 28th San Francisco International Lesbian & Gay Film
Festival, will run from June 17-27, 2004. The 28th edition of the San
Francisco International Lesbian & Gay Film Festival will delight over
80,000 attendees with nearly 80 features, including many world and US
premieres, and over 150 shorts. For more info and
 tickets:http://www.frameline.org/festival. Director Rose Troche, recipient
of this year’s Frameline Award for outstanding film accomplishments, has
much to celebrate — including the tenth anniversary of GO FISH.
Troche’s landmark directorial debut was widely considered the first
cross-over lesbian art-house film, and for many viewers, seeing it was a
life-changing experience. Could ten years have passed since we first made
the acquaintance of the idealistic Max (Guinevere Turner), who initially
rejects Ely (V.S. Brodie) because a “granola-crunching” lesbian
doesn’t quite match the image Max has in mind for a girlfriend? Max has a
lot to learn — but don’t we all? GO FISH stands the test of time for
a few key reasons. The story focuses on human discourse and relationships
rather than snappy plot twists and dynamic action. The black-and-white,
grainy quality, under the magic of Troche’s personal touch, evokes an
engaging artistry that is as inviting as it is unobtrusive. Troche’s
subtle, light-handed approach — to guide rather than pull — allows for
the development of a relationship not just between thecharacters, but
including the audience, too. Nostalgia aside, this charming love story is
as delightful and inspiring as ever. A timeless theme — discovering that
what you want is already there — pulls our heartstrings time and time
again. — Jim Norrena Filmmaker Rose Troche will be presented with
the 2004 Frameline award at this screening. \n
