DESCRIPTION:A Night with Fr. Roy Bourgeois Vietnam Vet, Purple Heart Recipient, and
Founder of the School of the Americas Watch Sponsored by the Solano Peace
and Justice Coalition Is Abu Graib an isolated incident? In Latin America
there is a similar pattern… The SOA/WHINSEC is a US Military training
school whose graduates have been trained in the use of torture and
implicated in some of the worst human rights abuses and acts of terror in
Latin America. §	Over 64,000 Latin American soldiers have been trained in
combat skills and psychological warfare at the U.S. Army’s School of the
Americas (now called WHINSEC). §	Graduates of the school have been
consistently involved in human rights abuses and atrocities in Latin
America. §	Manuals used for at least a decade to train Latin American
soldiers advocated torture techniques and methods for circumventing laws on
due process, arrest and detention. §	The manuals recommended the
imprisonment of family members of those who support “union organizing or
recruiting,” those who distribute “propaganda in favor of the interest
of workers,” those who “sympathize with demonstrations or strikes,”
and those who make “accusations that the government has failed to meet
the basic needs of the people.” According to Fr. Roy Bourgeois of SOA
Watch, “As in Latin America, officials claim the soldiers involved in
torture in Iraq are ‘just a few bad apples,’ but as instances of human
rights violations continue to grow around the world, a much larger picture
of systematic abuse becomes clear.” There is a growing movement both to
close the SOA/WHINSEC and to confront human rights abuses. For more
information on the SOA Watch go to http://www.soaw.org Free admission.
Donations to benefit the School of the Americas Watch gladly accepted.
